When reading Matthew 14:14-21 today and the miracle of Jesus feeding the 5,000, I came across this note and then a quote by Charles Spurgeon.
Jesus commanded the crowds to sit down on the grass. This command suggests that this was more than just putting food in their stomachs; that could have been done standing up. He had something greater planned. To sit down gave them a banquet-like atmosphere of enjoyment. Could this be a foreshadow of the great Messianic banquet the Messiah will enjoy with his people someday? Can you picture the scene? Oh what a moment in time!
“What a feast this (miracle) was! Christ for the Master of the feast; apostles for the butlers; thousands in numbers; and miracles for supplies.”
May we never forget the beauty of scripture and the hope that it brings.
