Immanuel - The Meaning

In Matthew 1:23 it shares the fulfillment of the Messianic Prophecy of Isaiah in 7:14.

”See, the virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel.

which is translated to “God with us.”

This message was told in Joseph’s angelic dream, that all him and Mary are experiencing is to fulfill the scriptures! There is so much packed into this dream, but one I want is to focus on is this word Immanuel.

Immanuel. God with us. This baby. Our Savior is to be God. Yet he will be fully human and with us. He is the Savior stated in verse 21 who will save his people, not just God’s chosen Jewish people, but his people, all people from their sins. And not just from their sins but also the power of sin and the presence and penalty of sin.

This baby is God in the flesh. Fully human and fully God. Who knew no sin from the start because he was FROM God. And would live a life of no sin because he IS God.

Do not let this word Immanuel just become another pretty word during Christmas. It has deep meaning and great impact for us! It’s powerful!

Reflect on the beauty of this word when you sing it’s Christmas Carol this year. Immanuel. GOD with us and God WITH us.

Amen.
