“For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.” - Luke 15:24

We have always loved this scene. A lost soul, head hung low, kicking the dirt as he slowly finds his way back home. He’s bruised and battered and oh so weary. Both body and soul. He’s humbly going over in his mind what to say to his Father. His mind races. Will he be turned away at the door? Shunned? Will his apology at least give him the servant’s quarters?

No.

The Father has been waiting, tosses dignity to the wind, picks up his robe, and races to his son. The text doesn’t say it but I imagine tears of joy streaming down the father’s cheeks, a mixture of exuberance, love, and relief filling his soul. He can’t help but plan a party because his son who he loved so dearly was lost. Was dead. But now alive and found. Oh how his heart flooded with thanksgiving.

The thing is… This is not just a story. It’s how God feels every time a soul that has been lost is found. It’s another brother and sister to welcome to the Great Banquet. The greatest party in heaven that will someday happen. God is waiting eagerly for you to come home to him. He doesn’t need your excuses. He holds no grudge. He just wants to lavish his love on you. Maybe just save him the energy and run to him instead ;). It’s worth it.

Maybe you need this exact reminder and we pray as you wear it that you are freely welcomed into the family God.
