Are We A Judas - John 12:5
In John 12 Mary the sister of Lazarus anoints Jesus’ feet with oil. We read about Judas’ large negative reaction in John 12:5 to such event. “that perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and money given to the poor.”
Blue Letter Bible David Guzik writes this:
“This was an awkward scene. (referencing Mary anointing the feet of Jesus) Then Judas broke the embarrassed silence with his sharp sense of financial values – but no appreciate of what God valued. He thought this was too much love and devotion to show to Jesus.
Was Judas in the wrong? Absolutely, but haven’t we been in the wrong as well?
Have you not seen a person in worship dance a little “too hard” and felt awkward and even slightly judge them?
Have you judge someone for being a bit radical because they gave it all up and were called by God?
We often look at Judas and judge harshly. I mean he is kind of the villain, but we instead need to look at Judas and make sure we check our hearts. Do we have a heart of true devotion like Mary, not worried what others think? Or are we a Judas, with a skeptical soul and heart motivated by worldly desires.
I know what I want to say… but I’m not sure the truth matches.
