Best Marriage advice

My husband and I are about to celebrate another year of marriage and this got me to reflect back to a vacation we took  and a great question we were asked.

What is the best marriage advice you’ve gotten?

What a great “ice breaker” question! I had to really think on this and in a good way because we’ve been lucky enough to get some really great relationship advice.

I personally said something like, you don’t have to solve your argument in the moment but you do need to come back to it. So if you are wondering… yes, I do go to bed mad sometimes. We also talked about how we heard in a sermon to “love God most so you can love your partner more.”

Then we asked the questions back. And while their answer was so simple… it was life changing.

Marriage is not 50/50. It’s 100/100.

How great is this! And how true. If we are only giving half of ourselves, it’s a relationship that might not survive. BUT if both couples are giving of their wholeselves, how wonderful it would be. And often times if one person truly gives 100 then the other partner will start giving of themselves more. Of course people are flawed and this doesn’t always happen and boundaries are needed. But with two healthy loving people living by this motto… a marriage can truly thrive.
