Meaning of Psalm 18:29

“In your strength I can crush an army;

with my God I can scale any wall.”

– Psalm 18:29

David sang this powerful psalm on the day the Lord rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul. While we tend to sing and focus on the first three verses of this psalm, the remainder 47 verses are full of truths, inspiration and encouragement, like verse 29.

David knew his strength was from the Lord and it was the Lord who went before him giving him victories over his enemies.

No wall could stand in God’s way.

In the ancient world, walls protected the cities, they were difficult to climb.  A large part of military success was overcoming the defensive walls. (Remember cannons weren’t invented until the 1700s.)  In verse 29, David is declaring and giving God the credit for military strategy and strength to overcome any wall, obstacle or defense.  God was the reason for David’s strength and success.

We pray this verse is a reminder that no matter what life throws our way, no matter what walls we have to climb, no matter what obstacles hold us back, God is our strength.  God is our know-how.  God is our way.  We just need to trust and rely on Him to overcome. He is our strength in the walls we must climb through in life.
