Meaning of Psalm 3:3

“ But you, O Lord, are a shield around me.

You are my glory, the One who holds my head high.”

- Psalm 3:3

In one of David’s darkest hours, he declared God his protector and glory.  David was fleeing from his rebellious son Absalom, who was trying to take the throne.

In the midst of panic, many, in verse 2, said God wouldn’t rescue David, likely crying out in fear.  But David stood firm and declared that God was his shield, his protector.  God was his glory.  In the midst of chaos, David stood on the mercy of God and trusted Him.  He knew that God would prevail and was still in control.  God would continue to hold him up.

We pray this verse is one of many reminders to have peace in your darkest times knowing we serve a God we can trust.  May He always be our shield as we put our hope in his protection.  May we find glory in God as David did and not the glory of earthly rewards and successes.  May we be at peace knowing God will lift us up and we can trust that His greater purposes always prevail.
