Proverbs 4 - often titled a Father’s Wise Advice, this chapter starts with words of wisdom passed down from King David to Solomon, later Solomon recounts these words to his children as we should to ours. He urges them to pay attention (v20) keep them close to the heart.
The heart back then was actually the source of intellect, emotion and will. A place from which everything flows. There was no concept of the brain. The heart was the center. Solomon saw it as something to be guarded, for the heart was the source of life and should be kept for wisdom.
Solomon shares with us what the straight path would look like in comparison the the wicked way in verses 10-19. The straight path leads to healing, health and life. It’s full of honest talk, a fixed gaze on His path and established steps in the gospel away from evil. But above all it is a life that guards your heart for the Lord. For if the heart is captured the whole being’s affections, desires, motives and pursuits will be handed over. (Blue letter Bible).
Our prayer is that you see great reward in guarding your heart for the Lord and keeping it for wisdom. For while we might have to say no to worldly pleasures and enticements, we can see the life giving joy of following the commands of a God who desires true joy and happiness for us.
