thy will be done - tee
“He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.” - Matthew 26:42
A passage that’s familiar to us if you’ve lived in the tension of the crucifixion. Mourning, aching, and waiting to celebrate. Jesus is in the garden. He’s distressed, distraught, and crying out to the Lord to remove the cup of agonizing suffering he knows he’s about to endure. He knows the excruciating pain he’s about to suffer both body and soul. Can God remove this cup of suffering? Of course He can, but He won’t.
And with that Jesus releases one of his greatest desires and accepts his fait, “thy will be done.” For he knows that there was always a plan. That’s why he came. And now he lays down his desire for something greater. He looks to his Father and becomes one with His desire. A desire to save His people. Jesus sets self aside and becomes one with the Father. Ready to walk the path that is set before him.
Can we do the same? Can we lay aside our self? Our desire? Our ambition to say yes, “your will God.”
Note: This verse takes place in the Garden of Gethsemane - an Olive grove. The olive branch is printed on the shirt with our verse reminder of “thy will be done.” The olive branch holds a beautiful meaning in the Bible. You can read about it here.
