“And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” - Mark 4:41
In a familiar story we often miss powerful and unexpected points. Such as the calming of the sea. This childhood story has taught us even from upon first hearing to even as adults to have faith and trust in God when trials and storms ravage our lives. And even when we feel Jesus is asleep he is still there… the peace in our storm.
Let’s take another look at this passage with deeper and fresh eyes and focus on the disciples’ reaction to the power and sovereignty they just witness captured our attention. “who can this be” Read it and picture yourself within the dramatic scene. Twenty foot waves crashing into you, water flooding in, fear taking over and your Messiah you’ve been following – asleep. Then this man just stands up, says two words, and complete peace takes over. Peace in the air, peace in the waves, and almost as if total peace in the world exists at that moment. Does your own heart begin to flutter at the power? Does the heaviness of breath become evident at this awe inspiring moment? Does your soul wrestle between fear and wonder? “Who can this be?” What a question!
The disciples just witnessed Jesus and all that he is. His deity on full display – fully man and fully God. Fully man tired and asleep one moment to awaken with a few simple words to fully God – Commanding nature and creation with complete authority to Be Still. And creation hauled to a stop and listened! No other human since the beginning of time has done what he just did. It’s as if with that simple yet supremely complex question the disciples’ eyes and stirring hearts were starting to open to who Jesus really was.
We pray as you put on this verse that you gaze with love, wonder and a whole lot of healthy fear of the mighty Jesus we serve who is sovereign above all things. Who can this be that calms even the wind and the seas?
