seventy seven times sweatshirt
seventy seven times sweatshirt
Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times. - Matthew 18:21-22
Rabbis had a rule that a person should be forgiven three times. In an effort to look good and generous, the Disciple Peter asks if they should forgive seven times which represents the perfect number. But Jesus responds perfectly as he always does to Peter. He does away with all rules, limits and calculations and responds with 70 x 7 or 77 times depending on the translation which represents an unlimited number.
Jesus is teaching what forgiveness looks like in the Kingdom community. How his followers should respond when wronged. Jesus is saying, don’t keep count, don’t let your heart keep score, constantly forgive the repentant soul no matter how often you are asked to forgive them.
Holding grudges, elevating ourselves over another is something society and ourselves (if we are honest) are very good at. Jesus calls us to be different. He doesn’t call us to be weak and allow people to walk all over us but he does call us to stand up humbly ready to love unconditionally with an understanding and forgiving heart. Let this sweatshirt be a reminder to do just that.
