And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll, and to open its seals; for you were slain, and have redeemed us to God by your blood out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,” - Revelations 5:9

To set the stage for this passage there is a scroll. A very important scroll and an angel calls out “who can open this scroll”. And as he looks out onto all the people and creation; they realize no one is worthy. The author John begins to weep. And not just weep but break down ugly cry because (debatably) it is said that the scroll holds the consummation of history and it would now be indefinitely postponed.

BUT no fear! Jesus the lion and lamb steps forward. For nothing created was worthy but the one who creates is. And the people begin to sing! And not just sing but sing a new song. The emphasis is on the word new. For God did a new thing. The new thing being the work of redemption. For he was killed, ransomed, and now gathers. This song honors the price of redemption, honors the one who redeemed us, and even more so being redeemed onto God. And for all eternity and all nations!

Do not let these words pass your eyes lightly! God redeemed you! To redeem means to gain or regain possession of. You are his for eternity and it is only by the grace of God that he welcomes us back into his family as priests to share his throne.

Amen. Amen. Amen.

Remember this huge truth every time you wear this tee. You are redeemed by your creator. You are made worthy. You will reign with him and sit on his throne. Until then we wait with great anticipation and knowing.
