What If There Was No Christmas?

Confession time: I’m not a fan of singing Christmas carols during worship at church.  

Please forgive me.

So when Sunday came and the tunes started and I realized what was happening… I went into instant bummer mode.  Ugh, Christmas carols.

But then one of my favorite worshippers sang “O Come O Come Emmanuel” by Sovereign Grace.  I put the lyrics below.  The key phrase that grabbed a hold of me was “the judgment we no longer fear”. This lyric line (I’m not sure what you call that) started to stir something big inside me and lead me down a rabbit hole of thoughts.

I always saw Zechariah’s loss of voice as a punishment.  But a sermon I recently listened to opened my eyes to another possibility.  What if there was a greater purpose to his silence? What if he was made silent to take notice of what God was up to? What if in his silence he finally took time to reflect on what God was doing? To meditate on God’s word and see prophesy fulfilled. Immanuel vs. Emmanuel

I have been confused for years on why sometimes “God with us” is spelled Immanuel or Emmanuel. Was I misspelling?!  Is there a different meaning?  Am I wrong, am I right? What in the world is going on? I never know how to spell it and I always second guess myself.

Turns out , it doesn’t matter!  The Bible actually uses both spelling.
